B, I’m back, on popular demand
Hi friends! Sorry I went AWOL for a minute there–these couple of weeks have been all sorts of crazy. But we move. Sun in the sky, and I’m feeling good! Spring is springing and though it wasn’t a terrible winter, all things considered, I am waiting on le printemps at the do’. Springtime is the best time–its French word, printemps even proves it: primus – first, temps – time/season, a.k.a spring is the number one, the prime season. Just like the fictional porridge longthroat Goldilocks ate, it’s just right–not too hot, not too cold.
As we shift into spring, I plan to do weekly installments of “the Spring Report”, bringing you the latest and best of spring/summer trends. Not to worry, this won’t get boring/monotonous. I’ll be trying hard to accompany these reports with posts on other topics. This week, the question is should you shoulder? Yes, yes yes. Shoulders had quite the moment last summer, the trend is still going strong, and won’t be going away anytime soon, from the look of the recently-concluded Fall/Winter ’16 Fashion Month.
So let’s not give this trend the cold shoulder–sorry friends, I can’t resist a good pun. Bare shoulders are fun and flirty, and can be incorporated in so many ways. While it’s still warming up, release your shoulders from their winter hunch in an off-shoulder knit, a la my style crush all day Fisayo Longe of Mirror Me:
Soon enough, it’ll be warm enough to ditch the knits, and then sis, the options are limitless. Give ’em the cold shoulder, or maybe even just one shoulder (yes friends, the “monostrap” from our primary school days is back). Feeling extra playful? Pop some frills on that neckline and let those collarbones take center stage!
The thing I love most about this trend is that depending on how you style, shoulder-baring silhouettes are perfect for any occasion: for a day when you want to feel like Kendall J. off-duty, for exploring the nooks of Old San Juan or a summer stroll in Positano–off-the-shoulder silhouettes always have me fantasizing about future holidays in spanish-, french- and italian-speaking countries–, or for more formal/dressy events. Accessorize with statement earrings, choker necklaces, or let your clavicles be the stars of the show with dainty, minimal jewelry.
One last thing. Since this blog is all about maximizing fashion $$, if you don’t want to go out and buy a new blouse/dress/jumpsuit, go into your closet, fish out your favorite button-down shirt *packet shirt as we Nigerians call it*, and let’s get creative. Take a cue from my faves and transform your favorite work shirt into a seriously stylish number for zero dollars and zero cents. For a brand new off-the-shoulder knotted crop top, simply unbutton the top half of your shirt, pull it over your shoulders, and tie it at the waist. This Vogue article is also a gem.
That’s it for today, friends! Thank you and stay tuned! When I said this blog would have something for everyone–girls and guys alike–I meant it. Something exciting coming your way!
